Drew Harkey Memorial Donations

Andrew James "Drew" Harkey (1964 - 2017)

Drew, 53, passed November 21, 2017 at his home in Charlotte after an extended illness.

He is survived by his mother, Terry Sullivan Taylor; father, James Franklin Harkey, Jr. (Elaine); his adoptive father, Thomas Edward Dill, MD; brothers, Scott Taylor Dill, Sr. (Amy) and Thomas Edward Dill, Jr.; and his former wife and dear friend, Diana Skeens.

Drew led a full life. He was an actor, writer, photographer, fisherman, hunter, and world traveler. He founded and managed a successful company that provided window cleaning and other house and grounds maintenance. He drew sustenance from being in nature and found wonder in the rare and in the ordinary.

His spiritual nature was marked by compassion and kindness. He quietly helped friends in distress and adversity. Service to others was part of his every day; he had 33 years of sobriety, during which time he shared his experience, strength, and hope with countless individuals. Steadfast mentor, loyal friend, playful relative, patient listener: Drew brought qualities of heart and mind to what he did and said.

He was uncle to Scott Taylor Dill, Jr., Austin Ashby Dill, and Sullivan Leigh Dill and was nephew to Tonda Anne Taylor and Janice Coulter, Andrew D. Taylor, Jr. (Susan Lupo, MD), Joanne Hutcheson, and Nancy Ducharme.

He is also survived by his cousins, Andrew DuVal Taylor, III, Robin Taylor Belk, Paul Hutcheson, Joe Hutcheson, and John Ducharme as well as by three of his closest friends, Ranjit Deora, Eddie DeRhodes, and Keith Kozar. Two loyal employees, Baldilio Lopez and Miguelina Carreto, were like family to him.

Drew was preceded in death by his grandparents, Andrew DuVal Taylor, MD and Anne Sullivan Taylor; James Franklin Harkey and Kathleen Foard Harkey; and Virginia Dill; an uncle, Samuel Clay Taylor; and stepfather, Russell Carl (Jack) Taylor, MD.

A service to celebrate Drew's life will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 5, at Myers Park United Methodist Church, 1501 Queens Road. His family will receive friends at the church following the service.
